SPHO-NJ Announces 2026 National Standardbred Horse Show Updates

A New Two-Ring Format and Division Changes Headline This Year's Show

September 18 to 20, 2026 | Horse Park of New Jersey, Allentown, NJ

The Standardbred Pleasure Horse Organization of New Jersey is excited to share several updates for the 2026 National Standardbred Horse Show. The headline change is a new two-ring format for our English and Western days, built to improve the flow of the show and give every horse and rider a better experience. Below is a division-by-division breakdown of what is new and what to keep in mind. The updated schedule, still tentative and subject to change, can be seen at sphonj.org/schedule.

Dressage

Dressage will be largely unchanged from 2025 in both divisions and class structure.

Divisions

  • Intro Walk/Trot: Intro A and B (Junior and Open)

  • Intro Walk/Trot/Canter: Intro B and C (Junior and Open)

  • Training and above: the first two tests at each level (for example, Training 1 and 2, First 1 and 2)

Rule Change. We have removed the rule that prohibited horses who previously competed at Training level from entering Intro divisions. This lets horses move between levels as needed to best showcase themselves at Nationals.

Important Reminders

  • Riders must be on time for their scheduled ride time. "On time" means you are coming down the centerline at your assigned ride time. Late rides will be scored as a disqualification, and late ride times will not be adjusted.

  • Each horse and rider pair is limited to a maximum of 2 dressage rides and may not cross-enter different dressage divisions.

  • A horse is permitted a 3rd dressage ride in a different division so the horse can be shared between a junior and a senior rider.

Dressage ride times will be announced the week of the show.

Driving

Class Size and Splitting. To improve judging accuracy, safety, and the overall exhibitor experience, rail classes will be capped at 8 horses. Any class that exceeds this number will be split into sections.

Combining Small Classes. Classes with fewer than 3 entries may be combined with an adjacent level. For example, Rookie may combine with Green, Green with Novice, or Novice with Senior.

Games and Contest

Steward and Safety Oversight (new for 2026). A designated games steward will be present to maintain safety and consistency throughout the games division. The steward is authorized to excuse riders or horses for any of the following:

  • Continuing to school the pattern after an error or going off-course

  • Failure to enter the arena within 60 seconds of being called

  • Dangerous or uncontrolled behavior

  • Lameness

  • Unsportsmanlike conduct

  • Conduct toward the horse that does not reflect the standards of care and horsemanship expected at SPHO

The steward will also enforce safety standards, including properly fitted helmets for riders 18 and under and appropriately fitted tack.

Order of Go (new for 2026). A published order of go will be set before the show. The DJ will announce who is currently up, who is on deck, and who is in the hole. Riders must enter the arena within 60 seconds of being called or will be excused.

Ribbons and Awards. Ribbon placements will be announced by division rather than pinned after each individual class.

English (Saturday)

Two-Ring Format, New for 2026. We are moving to a two-ring format to improve the flow of the day. For the first half of the day, rings will be organized by gait:

  • Ring 1: Walk/Intermediate Gait (2-Gait)

  • Ring 2: Walk/Intermediate Gait/Canter (3-Gait)

Both rings will run concurrently throughout the day. The full ring breakdown can be seen at sphonj.org/schedule.

Gait Declaration. Horses must be declared as either 2-gait or 3-gait for each show day and may not cross-enter 2-gait and 3-gait division classes within the same day. For example, a horse may not enter both English Pleasure (3-gait) and Hunter (2-gait) on Saturday. A horse may, however, compete at a different gait on each day, such as showing 3-gait on Saturday and 2-gait on Sunday.

Changes to English Pleasure Divisions. Each division will include the following classes:

  • English Pleasure: Horses are judged on manners, way of going, and suitability as a pleasure mount.

  • Discipline Rail: Horses are shown under saddle in any English discipline and judged on manners, obedience, and responsiveness to the rider. A willing, pleasant attitude and a safe, suitable way of going are paramount. The judge may ask for any or all of the following: walk, walk on a loose rein or on the buckle, trot, sitting trot, extended trot, canter, hand gallop, reverse, halt/stand, back, turn on the forehand, turn on the haunches, sidepass, leg yield, and serpentine or figure eight. Not all commands will be used. The judge may also request a lineup for individual inspection.

  • English Road Hack: A class that emphasizes ground-covering movement and manners. Horses are judged on their ability to travel efficiently and pleasantly, as if going out on the road.

Pacing for the Cure and Equitation Challenge. Both rings will hold so that all competitors can take part in Pacing for the Cure and the Equitation Challenge. These classes will be double judged. Each judge will independently place the class, and the placings from both judges will be combined to determine the final ribbon awards.

Equitation. Equitation classes will be split across both rings, keeping the same age and gait breakdown as prior years (for example, 13-18 2-Gait, 2-Gait Advanced, and 3-Gait).

Hunters and Jumpers. Jump courses will be set up in the indoor arena for the full day. This lets competitors school throughout the day and removes the need to set up and tear down jumps in the outdoor rings. Hunter classes will be split by horse level, gait, and height. Jumper classes will be split by height. Please note that in Hunter Over Crossrails and Hunter Over Fences, 3-gait horses are permitted to trot during their course.

Western and In-Hand (Sunday)

Two-Ring Format, New for 2026. We are moving to a two-ring format to improve the flow of the day. The full ring breakdown can be seen at sphonj.org/schedule.

Morning Session: In-Hand and Showmanship. The day will open with in-hand and showmanship classes, split across both rings and running concurrently where possible. Championship classes for both Showmanship and In-Hand will be double judged. Each judge will independently place the class, and the placings from both judges will be combined to determine the final ribbon awards and championship standings.

Leadline and Adoptables. Following the morning session, both rings will hold for Leadline and Adoptable horse classes to give maximum visibility to our leadline riders and adoptable horses. After these classes, rings will split by gait for the rest of the day:

  • Ring 1: Walk/Intermediate Gait (2-Gait)

  • Ring 2: Walk/Intermediate Gait/Lope (3-Gait)

As on the English day, horses must declare as either 2-gait or 3-gait for each show day and may not cross-enter 2-gait and 3-gait division classes within the same day. For example, a horse may not enter both Western Pleasure (3-gait) and Ranch (2-gait) on Sunday. A rider may compete at a different gait on each day, such as riding 3-gait on Saturday and 2-gait on Sunday.

Changes to Western Pleasure Divisions. Each division will include the following classes:

  • Western Pleasure: Horses are judged on manners, way of going, and suitability as a pleasure mount under western tack.

  • Western Discipline Rail (new for 2026!): Horses are shown under saddle and judged on manners, obedience, and responsiveness to the rider. A willing, pleasant attitude and a safe, suitable way of going are paramount. The judge may ask for any or all of the following: walk, walk on a loose rein or on the buckle, intermediate gait, extended intermediate gait, lope, reverse, halt/stand, back, turn on the forehand, turn on the haunches, sidepass, leg yield, and serpentine or figure eight. Not all commands will be used. The judge may also request a lineup for individual inspection.

Western Pleasure classes will be split by horse level:

  • Rookie/Green

  • Novice/Senior

Horsemanship. Horsemanship classes will be split across both rings by age, keeping the same gait breakdown as prior years (for example, U18 Horsemanship 2-Gait and 3-Gait, and 19+ and Beginner Horsemanship 2-Gait).

Ranch Division. The Ranch division will include Ranch Pleasure and Ranch Riding Pattern, split by horse level:

  • Rookie/Green

  • Novice/Senior

Trail Course. The trail course will be set up in the indoor arena and open for schooling throughout the morning session. Western Trail and English Trail will run concurrently. After the last class in the 3-gait ring, the 3-gait judge will move to the trail course, which will then be open for competitors to show at will.

Jersey Bred Division

We are excited to announce an updated format for the Jersey Bred Division at this year's National Standardbred Horse Show.

What's New. In previous years, Jersey Bred classes were offered as standalone classes, with horses of all levels competing against one another. This year, the division has been restructured to allow horses to compete against others of a similar level while earning points toward the Jersey Bred High Point Award at the National Standardbred Horse Show. Jersey Bred eligible classes will now run concurrently with their corresponding parent classes throughout the show. No additional trips to the ring or separate classes required. Eligible classes are denoted with an asterisk (*) in the prize list and show schedule.

Eligibility. A horse qualifies as Jersey Bred if it was sired by a stallion standing in New Jersey at the time of conception, or was born in the state of New Jersey. Please note that any NJ-sired horse that races after January 1 of the competition year is not eligible for Jersey Bred awards through the New Jersey Department of Agriculture Equine Advisory Board.

To compete in the Jersey Bred Division and receive prize money, the following requirements must be met:

  • The horse must be registered with SPHO-NJ

  • The exhibitor must be a current SPHO-NJ member

Full eligibility details can be found in Section 8 of the 2026 SPHO-NJ Rulebook.

Nomination. There is a one-time Division Nomination Fee of $100 per horse to compete in the Jersey Bred Division at the 2026 National Standardbred Horse Show.

Awards and Prize Money. At the conclusion of the show, points earned across all Jersey Bred eligible classes will be tallied and awards will be presented to the highest point earners in the division:

  • Grand Champion: Cooler and ribbon

  • Reserve Champion: Cooler and ribbon

  • 3rd through 10th place: Ribbons

  • Prize money of $300 will be paid out through 4th place

Additional Prize Money Through the New Jersey Non-Racing Breeder Award Program. All horses nominated for the Jersey Bred Division at the National Standardbred Horse Show will also be eligible to receive additional prize money through the New Jersey Non-Racing Breeder Award Program, based on points earned in Jersey Bred eligible classes at our show.
